Wilkes, Cortland women lose;
Carthage avenges Elmhurst
King's Corey Dickerson
King's Corey Dickerson scored on two consecutive fast-break layups in a 6-0 run to give his Monarchs the lead.
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Battling a week-long viral infection, senior guard Corey Dickerson scored a team-high 30 points to power King's to a crucial 73-70 road victory against No. 2 and previously unbeaten Wilkes on Jan. 30 in the Marts Center.

Wilkes, which entered the game 16-0, appeared to have a decided advantage with Dickerson ill and No. 2 scorer Dennis Hobbs missing nearly a week of action and playing with an injured foot.

But the Monarchs (14-5, 6-4 MAC Freeedom) came out of the gates to control the first half while building a 24-15 points lead thanks in large part to two monster dunks by Kevin Vincavage. The Monarchs would extend the lead to 28-18 on a Dickerson bucket, but the Colonels (16-1, 9-1) would close out the half with a 9-4 run to come to within 32-27. Dickerson led the first-half charge with 13 points.

King's opened the second half with a 15-2 run, keyed by eight points by Dickerson and five points by Kasim Holloman with 15:10 remaining to up their lead to 47-29. But Colonels All-American guard Dave Jannuzzi keyed a 21-5 run with 18 points to bring Wilkes to within 52-50 with 9:07 remaining. Wilkes took the lead a minute and a half later on a pair of foul shots by Dave Plisko. King's recaptured the lead at 56-55 on two Vincavage free throws before the Monarchs added a pair of Dickerson layups off steals to go ahead 60-55.

With King's leading 71-66, Alex Hairston cut the margin to three on a dunk with 0:20 left. After a steal by Plisko on the inbound pass, Jannuzzi got the ball near the left sideline and Monarch rookie Brian Horgan made the defensive play of the game when he tied up the Colonel standout and forced a jump ball with the arrow pointing to King's. From there, Hobbs was fouled and hit both tosses to up the Monarch lead to ice the game.

King's held a 31-22 advantage in made free throws but was only 31-for-51 on the night while Wilkes was 22-for-30.

Hobbs scored 13 points and snaring a game-high 12 rebounds while noticeably limping throughout the second half. Holloman added 12 points and five rebounds. Jannuzzi, who scored just four points in the first half, led Wilkes with 30 points, including 26 in the second stanza.

"This was one of the best Division III basketball games I've ever seen," Head Coach Mark Scherer said. "We let it slip away. They made the big plays down the stretch and that was the difference."

Junior guard Justin Carley led Elmhurst with 24 points, dished out four assists and had two steals on the game. Senior Ryan Knuppel hit three three-pointers early in the first half, but didn't connect in the second half. He was 5-for-13 from the field and finished with 17 points, three assists and two steals.
