No. 6 Scranton rallies to defeat Delaware Valley
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — It isn't often that Mike Strong and his Scranton women's team finds itself in the role of a spoiler.

No. 23 Bridgewater men top No. 9 Hampden-Sydney
BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Bridgewater outscored Hampden-Sydney 35-27 in the second half to come from behind and upset the No. 9 Tigers 69-67 on Saturday in BC’s Ninninger Hall. The win moves the No. 23 Eagles to 10-0 on the year, 4-0 in the ODAC, while the Tigers drop to 9-1, 3-1.

Bridgewater opened the game by scoring six straight points on the Tigers and maintained a slim two-to-three point advantage nearly seven minutes into the opening half. The Tigers battled back and took their first lead of the game (14-12) on a Bobby Jackson layup with 14:26 to play.

The game remained tight as Bridgewater tied the contest at 18 with 11:58 to play before taking a two-point lead on Jermaine Reed’s layup with 10:26 remaining. The Tigers then pulled out to an eight-point lead by virtue of a 10-0 run that made the score 28-20 with 8:02 left in the half.

Bridgewater came back and tied the game at 34 with 2:33 to play, but the Tigers finished the half on a 6-0 run to lead heading into the locker room. The Eagles, the top team in Division III in field goal percentage, shot just 35% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while the Tigers shot 57%, paced by Bobby Jackson’s 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

The Eagles came out of the locker room strong in the second half, erasing the six-point Tiger lead with a 12-5 run that put BC on top, 48-45 with 15:30 to play. Kevin Swann’s jumper at 14:07 tied the game at 48 before the Tigers went on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 55-50 with 12:21 remaining.

A Swann three put the Tigers up 58-51 with 11:30 to go, but that was as large as the lead would get as Bridgewater went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes and held a 62-58 lead after a Matt Stevens jumper with just over six left to play.

The teams then traded baskets over the next three minutes before a free throw by Matt McKeag and another three by Swann put the Tigers up 65-64 with 3:20 to play. That lead proved to be the Tigers' last as Shane Burnette converted a layup just seconds later to give BC a 66-65 advantage.

Hampden-Sydney missed several opportunities over the next two minutes as Bobby Jackson could not convert on a free throw while freshman forward Mike Thompson narrowly missed two layups. On the other end, BC lead Kyle Williford made a layup with 17 seconds remaining on the clock to put the Eagles up by three, 68-65.

Bobby Jackson scored on a layup with four seconds remaining to cut the lead to one as the Tigers fouled BC point guard Justin Bourne with 2.4 ticks on the clock. Bourne converted the first layup, but missed the second and the Tigers’ Brandon Randall's last-second half-court shot came up empty and sealed the game for BC.

Bridgewater was 18-for-21 from the line for the game, while the Tigers made just 10 of 17 and were only 3-for-7 in the second half.

Bobby Jackson led all scorers with 21 points, while he also added a team-high nine rebounds. Matt McKeag finished with 11 points for the Tigers, while Kevin Swann scored eight. Mike Thompson and Randall both finished with six points.

The Tigers held Williford to 12 points, below his season average of 18, while he ripped down 12 boards. Shane Burnette led the Eagles with 18 points, while Jermaine Reed finished with 14.

The loss for the Tigers was their first regular season ODAC defeat since Feb. 10, 1999, when they were defeated by Virginia Wesleyan, and it snaps the team’s 23-game ODAC regular season win streak and 35-game overall regular season win streak.

Brand-new No. 3 teams swept at home

Tara Schmitt
Freshman Tara Schmitt scored four points Wednesday night for Stevens Point, including the game-winning points, all from the line.
Both No. 3 ranked teams in the D3hoops.com rankings fell at home Jan. 3 as the UW-Eau Claire men won at UW-Stevens Point 70-60 and the UW-Stevens Point women returned the favor in Eau Claire with an 83-81 win against the Blugolds.

The women's game snapped UW-Eau Claire's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak at 23 games and broke the Pointers' 13-game losing streak against the Blugolds, marking their first win against UW-Eau Claire since 1994.

The No. 3 UW-Eau Claire women (11-2) led 58-43 with 12:45 left, but the Pointers (10-2) rallied behind junior Kari Groshek, who scored 17 of the team's 40 points in the final 12:45. Groshek finished with 26 points as the Pointers won at Eau Claire for the first time since 1991. Freshman Tara Schmitt hit two free throws to break the 81-81 tie with four seconds left for the Pointers.

The game featured eight ties, but the Blugolds scored the next point to break seven of them. UW-Stevens Point tied the game at 59-59 with 3:21 left on a 25-footer by Jay Bennett, but the Blugolds broke the tie on a 25-footer at the other end by Todd Marks with 2:46 left. Lebanon Valley upsets No. 8 Catholic men
ANNVILLE, Pa. -- The score of tonight's men's basketball game between Lebanon Valley and No. 8 Catholic almost turned out the way a Top 10 team usually defeats an unranked opponent, but LVC used a 20-3 run in the second half to turn back the Cardinals 75-65.

The Cardinals (7-3) jumped out to a 34-25 halftime lead and looked in command. Senior Pat Maloney went on a scoring spree by netting 17 points in the first 20 minutes alone, shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range.

LVC (7-5) fell behind 51-35 with just over 13 minutes left to play, but continued to stay in the ball game. Sophomore center Darren Pugh added a three-point play and freshman Evan Harlor drained one of his two three-pointers to pull the Dutchmen within 10.

Sophomore John Sharkey then scored six of the Valley's next eight points to close the gap to 51-48. After junior Ryan Moore made two foul shots and Catholic got a bucket from Matt Hilleary, LVC's senior Chris Ziegler brought the house down and tied the game on his only three-pointer of the game. LVC would take the lead for good when Sharkey sunk two of his 15 points with just over five minutes left in the game.

Senior Steve Horst led the Dutchmen with 20 points, adding nine rebounds, three blocks, three steals and going 9-for-17 from the floor. Pugh added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Ziegler finished with 14 points.

Howanski rallies F&M past No. 21 Messiah
GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Junior Amy Kreitz converted one of two foul-shots with one second left in the game as the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats (7-3) stunned nationally ranked Messiah (7-3) 72-71.

Messiah, which carried a 33-29 lead into the second half, was shocked by a blitzing performance from Lauren Howanski who lowered the boom on the Falcons with 21 second half points as the Diplomats outscored Messiah 43-38 in the second frame. For the game, Howanski finished with a game-high 29 points and Kreitz added 24 points for the Diplomats while pulling down a team-high nine boards.

The game's final was decided in controversial fashion when a foul was called on Messiah following a missed goal attempt by F&M in which a Falcon player dove to the floor in a desperate attempt to corral the loose ball. Kreitz hit the first free throw and missed the second, but Messiah was unable to fire a shot following the rebound.

For the game, F&M shot 43.3% from the floor (29-for-67), including 6-for-15 from three point range, while Messiah connected on 51.7% of their shots (30-for-58) and shot 1-for-3 from three-point range.

Carthage used a 19-8 run to take a 50-49 lead, its first since the opening basket, thanks to a jumper by Antoine McDaniel at the midway point of the second half. The lead changed hands several times before McDaniel's free throws, and Tampa's Jon Brown missed a three-pointer that would have won the game in regulation

Carthage took the lead for good in overtime, 71-69, on a Ktistou jumper with 3:34 to go. Ktistou connected on another jumper at 2:10 that bounced up off the rim and fell in for a 73-70 lead. Jason Wiertel made it 75-72 with a layup at 1:25 and 77-72 with a pair of free throws at the 30-second mark. Juniata men off 8-2 start, their best in 55 seasons
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Juniata men returned to action following the holiday break with an impressive 81-66 win against host Springfield in the first round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic on Jan. 2. The triumph was the fourth in a row for the Eagles and moved the club to 8-2 overall and into the championship game of the tournament against Mass-Dartmouth (8-1).

Juniata is now off to its best start to a campaign since the 1945-46 team (a span of 56 seasons) began the year with a 9-2. It also marked the blue and gold's first four-game winning streak since 1991-92.

Overall, Juniata nailed a tournament-record 15 treys on the night and shot 51.7% from behind the arc for the game (15-for-29). The 15 successful three-pointers by Juniata was three short of tying the program single-game standard of 18 set against Susquehanna on Jan. 11, 1990. Crandall also had five assists, two steals and one rebound. Over his last four games, Crandall is averaging 17.3 points a contest.

Freshman forward Ben Gallagher posted a season-best 19 points, pulled down three rebounds, while posting three steals, two assists and one blocked shot.
