Veenstra rallies Calvin to win over Hope
D3hoops.com GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. With 12 minutes remaining Saturday, the Knights of Calvin College were in danger of completing a week-long freefall from the Top 5 in the national rankings to third place in their own conference. Enter Jeremy Veenstra. The 6-5 sophomore forward scored 10 of his career-high 34 points during a 21-4 run that wiped out a 10-point deficit, and the No. 4 Knights went on to defeat archrival Hope 95-85 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,500 at Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin (12-3), which was coming off a stunning 77-68 loss at home to Albion Wednesday in which it lost senior captain Brian Krosschel to a season-ending knee injury, moved back into a tie for first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with the Flying Dutchmen (4-1, 11-6). Hope, meanwhile, saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end. The Flying Dutchmen had surged ahead 69-59 on a 13-2 run that was sparked by three 3-point baskets from senior guard Kyle VanderWall, who hit six 3-pointers for the game. That run led to a Calvin timeout in which coach Kevin Vande Streek chastised Veenstra for the way he was playing defense. "We had a little one-way discussion," Vande Streek quipped. "I missed a few closeouts (on the defensive end). To be honest with you, I didn't play real good defensively for a stretch," Veenstra said. Veenstra and the Knights responded in a big way after the timeout. Calvin scored the next seven points to pull within three. After Ryan Klingler scored on a rebound to push the Hope lead to five, reserve Dave Bartels and point guard Jon Potvin each nailed 3-pointers to give the Knights a 72-71 lead with 8:32 to play. "I thought we maintained our poise really well with a lot of different people (in the game)," Vande Streek said. "The nice thing about many guys on our team is that they've been in big games in high school." Veenstra, whose previous career high was 25 points, then scored six of Calvin's next eight points to push the lead to 80-73 with 4:21 to play. The Flying Dutchmen got no closer than four points the rest of the way. "We were confident we could come back," Veenstra said. "We've been down in big games before, and we were confident we could get back in the game.We knew it had to start with the defense." On the other side, Hope coach Glenn Van Wieren said his team let down defensively during Calvin's big run. "You're feeling comfortable, you've got a lead, your guys are playing great, playing great defensively, and all of a sudden, things unravel a little bit," Van Wieren said. "It was a total letdown defensively on our part." Hope led most of the first half, twice building up leads of seven points. Calvin cut the lead to two late in the first half, but Chad Carlson's two foul shots gave the Flying Dutchmen a 45-41 halftime lead. Veenstra made 9 of 16 shots from the field and outscored the entire Hope team from the foul line, making 15 of 17 from the stripe. The Flying Dutchmen, meanwhile, made only 7 of 13 from the line. Calvin finished with 28 free throws made in 37 attempts, offsetting Hope's advantage in field goals (33-31) and 3-pointers (12-5). In addition to his 34 points, Veenstra also grabbed 10 rebounds to help Calvin control the boards by a 43-29 margin. Center Josh Tubergen had nine boards and 5-11 guard Nate Burgess pulled down seven as they picked up the slack for the missing Krosschel, who was Calvin's second-leading rebounder at 6.2 boards a game. Point guard Bryan Foltice, the hero for Calvin in last year's Final Four semifinal win over Franklin and Marshall, scored 14 points despite being limited to 19 minutes playing time with a sprained knee. Tubergen had 12 points and Burgess 10. VanderWall led Hope with 18 points, while Carlson added 16, Chad Zagar 12 and Klingler 10. The win was Calvin's third straight over Hope in the series that dates back to 1920. The Knights now hold the series lead, 74-71, and have outscored the Flying Dutchmen in the series by a mere 15 points, 9,570-9,555. Box
