Division III players head down under
Division III players take third place.
A group of Division III basketball players and coaches took their game “down under” to compete in the 2005 Eastern University Games in Tamworth, Australia.
Led by coach Beth O'Boyle of Montclair State, Shannon Howley of Arcadia and Montclair assistant Karin Harvey, the team captured the bronze medal with a 4-1 showing against a pool of Australia collegiate teams.
The team advanced to the medal round on a three-point play by Elizabethtown's Jen Roberts at the buzzer. After falling to 79-55 University of Western Sydney in the semifinal, the team rebounded to beat the University of Technology-Sydney 95-67.
“Taking home the bronze medal was a great way to complete an incredible tournament,” noted O'Boyle. “Overall, the coaches and the players had a great experience competing against the Australian universities and learning how to adjust to the international game.”
The team's roster: Deb Charamella (Bryn Mawr); Stephanie Finke (Rowan); Mary Lennick (Trinity, Conn.); Kristen Fucarile, Jen Caron and Kristen Fucarile (Simmons); Ally Teatom (Dickinson); Jennifer Roberts (Elizabethtown); Steph Witko (Marymount).
The University Games is a four-day event drawing 28 Australian universities participating in 19 sports.
Concordia (Wis.) gets former coach back
Wayne Rasmussen will begin his second stint as the men's basketball coach at Concordia (Wis.) this fall, athletic director Rob Barnhill announced. “Concordia is blessed to welcome coach Rasmussen. He will combine enthusiasm and experience with a thorough knowledge of this campus, the Lake Michigan Conference, and the game of basketball.”
For 17 years (1963-79) Rasmussen coached basketball at Walther High School in Chicago while teaching religion, Latin, and history, plus working as a counselor. His first collegiate assignment followed as he took the reins for three seasons (1980-83) at Concordia (Neb.). He then returned to Wisconsin and coached the CUW men for nine seasons, compiling a 105- 63 record in the process.
While spending two years as an assistant coach at Milwaukee Lutheran High, Rasmussen served as principal at Grace Lutheran School in Menomonee Falls. He was part of the Wisconsin Lutheran men's basketball staff for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 campaigns before taking over at Concordia-Austin.
For the past nine seasons he has once again been an assistant at WLC.
Rasmussen graduated from Concordia Senior College (Fort Wayne, Ind.) in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in classical languages. He earned his master's degree in education from Concordia (Ill.) in 1967. He and his wife Marilyn reside in Milwaukee.
“My real passion is to work with college-age youngsters; helping them to grow as people as well as athletes,” Rasmussen said. “Concordia will provide an atmosphere to operate with that in mind in a spiritual way. I look forward to the opportunity.”
