Rochester 74, Brandeis 68

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Jeff Juron and Rob Dominiak combined for nine points in the last minute of play as top-ranked Rochester held off second-ranked Brandeis, 74-68, at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Juron drove for a layup against the press and added a free throw to extend Rochester's lead to 68-63 with 57 seconds left. Brandeis battled back on a free throw and jumper from Andre Roberson to pull within 68-66 with 32 seconds remaining. Juron sank two free throws with 18 seconds left and Dominiak made four of four in the last 10 seconds.

Mike Chmielowiec led Rochester with 14 points. Dominiak scored 12, and Juron had 10, plus a season's high nine assists in 23 minutes off the bench. The Yellowjackets hit 60% from the floor (24-40).

Brandeis used 16 points from Kevin Olseon, 14 from Roberson, and 10 from Joe Coppens. Kwame Graves-Fulgham had nine points and three of the Judges' nine steals.

Rochester is 14-0 overall, 3-0 in the University Athletic Associaiton. Brandeis is 12-2, 2-1 in the UAA. The Judges' two losses have come against the only two unbeaten teams in the D3hoops.com national poll. Brandeis lost in overtime to UMass-Dartmouth, then knocked off top-ranked Amherst in early December. That victory allowed Rochester to move from number two to number one. The Yellowjackets and Judges have been ranked 1-2 since the second week in December.

Brandeis forged ahead early, taking a seven-point lead at 12-5 when Coppens sank a jumper. Rochester answered with a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to move in front, 18-15. Five players scored in the run for Rochester. Jon Onyiriuka had four of the 13 points.

The Yellowjackets slowly stretched the lead, moving in front at halftime, 40-32, on Uche Ndubizu's short jumper with just over a minute to play.

Four early points from Stephen Hill got the Judges going in the second half. Hill's jumpshot brought Brandeis within three, 47-44, five minutes into the half. A layup by Roberson cut it down to one, 49-48, with 12:23 to play.

Rochester went on a 9-2 spurt highlighted by three free throws from Chmielowiec and Mike Labanowski's third three-point goal of the game. The lead was 58-50 with 8:52 left.

Both teams struggled to score after that. Ndubizu made one free throw for a 10-point lead, 63-53, with 2:41 remaining. Robertson hit a perimeter jumper, then knocked down a three-pointer in a span of 39 seconds to cut it to five. Hill's two free throws made it 63-60 with 1:35 left.

After two free throws by Ndubizu, Coppens hit a trey and the Judges were within two, 65-63, with 1:05 to play.

Juron's three-point play followed.

A crowd of 1,750 turned out, the largest home crowd in 16 years.
