The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater fell to Illinois Wesleyan University 85-71 in the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III basketball championship tournament Friday evening in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Illinois Wesleyan, 22-6, will now go onto play Lawrence University, 25-0, Friday at a site to be announced Monday. The Warhawks finish the season 23-6, first in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and WIAC postseason tournament champions.
Illinois Wesleyan shot 68% from the floor, including 8-12 (67%) from beyond the arc, to take a 47-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Whitewater shot 36% from the field and 20% (1-5) from the line in the first twenty minutes.
IWU led 65-50 at 8:43 when the Warhawks outscored the Titans 10-4 to cut the deficit to 69-60 with 5:02 left. Nine of Wesleyans final sixteen points came from the free throw line.
For the game, Wesleyan (25-36) made as many free throws as Whitewater attempted (14-25).
Leading the Warhawks was senior guard Melvin Williams with 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Junior center Andy Freund added nine points along with a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Jeremy Manchester (g, Racine/St. Catherines) closed out his college basketball career with nine points and a team-leading four assists. As a team, the Warhawks shot 44.1% from the field, however shot 56% from the free throw line.
Illinois Wesleyan was led by senior guard Adam Dauksas with a career high of 31 points on 9-13 from the field and 6-9 from the three point range. Dauksas added a game-high five assists. Senior forward Keelan Amelianovich and junior center Zach Freeman each added 20 and 11 points respectively. Senior forward Cory Jones led both teams with nine boards. As a team, Illinois Wesleyan shot 59% from the field and 55% from the three point range.
This is the third meeting between Illinois Wesleyan and UW-Whitewater in NCAA Division III tournament play. In the first of the two previous meetings, which took place on March 2, 1984, UW-Whitewater defeated Wesleyan 75-67. In the second meeting, which took place on February 28, 1986, Illinois Wesleyan defeated UW-Whitewater 79-75.
