Whitewater Tops DePauw to Move to Second Round
in NCAA III Basketball Tournament

UW-Whitewater defeated DePauw University 76-68 Friday evening in a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Championship Tournament first round game in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater.

With the victory the Warhawks, 23-5, will advance to play Illinois Wesleyan University, 21-6, an 81-68 winner in Fridays other first round game in Whitewater. The game will tip off at 7:00 in Kachel Gym. Call (262) 472-2222 for ticket information.

DePauw's only lead of the game came at 14:10 in the first half, 7-6 on a three-pointer by senior guard Alex Stewart. Whitewater responded with an 11-2 run over a four minute span. Whitewater took a 36-25 lead into intermission.

DePauw cut the margin to three twice in the second half, and only trailed 69-65 with 3:15 remaining. In the next 2:09 Whitewater iced the game, increasing the margin to 76-66.

Whitewater was led in scoring by senior forward Melvin Williams' 16 points. Also in double figures were sophomore forward Rob Perry and junior guard Anthony Mlachnik, with 15 each. Junior forward Mike Toellner made it four Warhawks in double figures, scoring 14. Senior guard Jeremy Manchester led the Warhawks with four assists and two blocked shots.

Stewart led the Tigers with 19 points and 5 steals, and sophomore forward Stephen Schoot with 11. Freshman guard Mike Moore led both teams with six assists.

Whitewater hit 16-19 free throws, while DePauw went 7-10 from the line. Whitewater also shot 50% from the floor, and DePauw 42%.

DePauw ends the season 15-13.
