Welton entered tonight’s contest 11 points shy of 1,000 and finished the evening with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, three-of-five from three-point range, and five-of-five from the free throw line. Welton reaches the 1,000 mark in just over one and one-half seasons in the AU men’s basketball program. He scored 562 points as a freshman and following last night’s game; he has 453 points in his sophomore campaign. On the year, Welton is averaging 22.7 points per game and is shooting 47.7 percent from the field.
In last night’s action, Welton had a team-high 26 points and added 13 rebounds and three assists, sophomore guard Doug Lambert had 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field off the bench, while freshman guard Chad Trudo chipped in 17 points on 5-of-11 shotting from three-point range and senior forward Jeremy Cartwright added 14 points on six-of-seven shooting from the field. AU shot 52.2 percent from the field for the game and out-rebounded Judson 48 to 21, but Judson shot an incredible 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from three-point range on the night.
Welton and the Spartan men are in action next on Saturday, February 4, 2006, when they host the Regents of Rockford College in Thornton Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. in a Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference men’s basketball showdown. The Spartan men are currently 11-9 on the season and 4-1 in the NIIC.
