A three-point basket by freshman guard Sean Burton (Notre Dame/Yorkville) with 8:55 left gave the Bombers the lead for good. The Red Dragons closed to within one on three occasions -- twice on layups by junior guard Michael Reardon (Monsigor Farrell/Staten Island) -- but Ithaca held on to improve to 7-2 at home.
Senior guard Jonathan Whetstone (Palo Alto/Palo Alto, Calif.) added seven assists and eight rebounds for the Bombers, who owned a 42-29 rebounding advantage. His seven assists give him a career total of 304, making him the sixth Bomber to reach 300.
Senior guard Sean Coffey (New Paltz/New Paltz) led the Red Dragons with 18 points. Reardon added 12 and junior forward Jason Murphy (Robert Wagner/East Elmhurst) finished with 10.
The Bombers (9-9) begin the second half of Empire 8 play Friday night with an 8 p.m. game at Rochester Institute of Technology. Ithaca and the Tigers are two of three teams tied for second in the conference standings, a game behind league-leading St. John Fisher.
