Baptist Bible 76, Cazenovia 68

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. — Both Cazenovia College Wildcats basketball squads, in their Tues., Jan. 31, North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) double-header with the Baptist Bible College Defenders, fell just short of victories as the Defenders pulled off dramatic and valiant comebacks in both games.

The women’s game featured a strong showing for the Wildcats. Leading late in the second half, the Wildcats gave way to a last-minute Baptist Bible comeback that culminated in a 71-75 loss. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 5-14 on the year and 4-6 in NEAC play. Baptist Bible improves to 13-4 with the win and 9-2 in conference play.

Playing shorthanded due to team injuries, Cazenovia traded leads with the Defenders and ultimately pulled away for a 41-38 halftime advantage. The second half saw Cazenovia expand on its lead. The Wildcats pulled ahead by a game-high lead of 18, in the second half, when Talia Habeck (’06, Palmyra / Palmyra-Macedon HS) hit a floating jumper, thanks to a Jenna Lipiska (’07, Weedsport / Weedsport HS) assist, that made the score 60-42 at 11:42.

The Defenders would battle back behind the clutch shooting of Jessica Doane. Going on a 2-14 run over the next five minutes, the Defenders closed the gap to eight points on a Doane steal and subsequent lay-up. Doane’s biggest play came in the final 29 seconds. Hitting three of her team-high 23 points, Doane gave Baptist Bible a three-point lead at 69-72.

The Wildcats, down 71-73 after a Doane free-throw make and miss, had possession of the ball with 16 seconds remaining on the clock and the opportunity to hoist a game-winner. However, The Defenders’ Molly Walton would anticipate the Wildcats’ perimeter passing, steal the ball, and finish the game with a definitive lay-in.

Ashley Lewis (’07, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS) played brilliantly in the loss for the Wildcats. Cazenovia’s point guard finished with game-high 25 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal in the loss. The Wildcats were previously 2-0 in games in which Lewis scored 20 or more points.

The men’s game saw a similar Wildcats lead negated by a similarly dramatic Defender comeback. With the 68-76 loss, the Wildcats move to 6-14 on the year and 5-6 in NEAC play. The Defenders improve to a 13-4 overall record with the win and a conference best 9-2 record in NEAC play.

Nip and tuck through the entire first half, the Defenders and Wildcats exchanged leads and ties, until the 3:05 mark, when Steven Zavackis (’07, Carthage / Carthage HS) hit a lay-in under the basket to put the Wildcats up by one at 38-37. Expanding their lead, the Wildcats went into the intermission up five when Josh Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS) hit one of his three three-pointers on the night to put Cazenovia up 44-39.

The second half found the Defenders ready for a comeback. Korey Collins, who finished with 20 points, helped Baptist Bible pull ahead for its first second-half lead, with nine minutes remaining, when he hit a lay-up under the basket that made the game 54-55. Trailing by as many as nine in the final five minutes, the Wildcats could only watch as the Defenders went 13-for-15 from the charity-stripe to maintain the lead. Two blocks in the final minute of play from Baptist Bible’s David Stallard and Derek Jacobs sealed the win.

Stallard finished with an impressive 24 points, a game-high eight rebounds, four assists, a game-high six steals and a game-high three blocks. Stallard played 38 minutes and was 9-for-16 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity-stripe.

Cazenovia’s Steven Harris (’09, Watervliet / Watervliet HS) tied for a game-high 23-point night with Baptist Bible’s Stallard. Harris was 6-for-15 from beyond the three–point line in the game also finished with three points, three assists and four steals.

Winans finished the night with a double-double. His second double-double in as many games, Winans recorded 15 points, 10 assists and five steals.

The Wildcats, who were 8-for-13 from three in the first half, were just 1-for-12 from three in the second half.

Cazenovia is next in action on Sat., Feb. 4. The women’s and men’s squads take on Villa Julie College, in Stevenson, Md., at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, respectively.
