Westfield State 71, Bridgewater State 59

BRIDGEQWATER, Ma — In MASCAC men’s basketball action this evening, the Westfield State College Owls used a strong second half to defeat the host Bears of Bridgewater State, 71-59, from the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.

With the victory, the Owls improve to 13-7 on the season and 5-2 in the MASCAC as they have won their last four straight. Bridgewater falls to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play as the Bears’ modest three-game winning streak comes to an end.

Westfield held the Bears to just 18 second half points as WSC erased a 41-33 halftime deficit. Bridgewater hit on only 7 of 31 (23%) field goal attempts in the second stanza including 0 for 12 from three-point range.

The Owls had five players in double figures led by freshman guard Dave Jaehnig (Quincy, MA) who finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard Gavin Illangakoon (Melbourne, Australia) added 14 points and 6 assists, while junior forward Curtis Gadles (Pembroke, MA) chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards. Senior forward James Ogbunize (Staten Island, NY) finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds, while senior forward Mike Jurkowski (Belchertown, MA) posted 11 points and 8 boards.

BSC junior center Derek Thompson (Hyannis, MA) had a tremendous all-around game for the Bears as she scored a game-high 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Thompson also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, and registered 4 assists and 2 blocked shots.

The Bears are now off until Saturday when they travel to Framingham State College to take on the Rams. Tip-off is slated for 3 PM. Westfield is also back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Owls play host to Worcester State at 3 o’clock.
