St. Thomas 76, Gustavus Adolphus 58

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Guards Bryan Schnettler and Sean Sweeney combined to make seven 3-pointers as host St. Thomas (15-4 overall, 12-2 MIAC) scored a 76-58 victory over visiting Gustavus (13-5, 8-5) in MIAC men's basketball Monday night at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

Schnettler scored 17 points, Sweeney added 16 points, Isaac Rosefelt had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Joey Shimek had eight of his 10 points in the second half and added four assists. Mike Keating had nine points and five rebounds.

The Tommies, who outrebounded the Gusties 35-21, shot 59% from the field in the first half (19-of-32) and 53% on the game (31-of-59) and posted a 24-9 advantage in 3-point scoring. UST is now 15-0 this season when it outshoots its opponent from the field.

The Toms, now 17-2 at home over the last two seasons, maintained their one-game lead atop the MIAC standings as second-place Carleton (11-3 MIAC) rolled past Augsburg Monday night for its 11th win in a row.

Adam TeBrake had 19 points for the Gusties, who dropped 3 1-2 games back of the lead in their bid for their third consecutive MIAC title. Trevor Wittwer scored 15 points and Jay Stein had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Gustavus shot 46% from the field (22-of-48) and made 11-of-14 at the line.

Gustavus' only lead came at 2-0. The Gusties trailed by 14 at halftime and never got closer than 10 in the second half. They pulled within 61-51 on TeBrake's jumper with 8:47 left, but were outscored 13-2 over the next 7:45.

St. Thomas built a 45-31 halftime lead and overcame major foul trouble in the second half. The Toms had three starters with four fouls with 12:00 to play and were clinging to a 10-point lead, as UST had 17 fouls to GAC's five at that point. But Shimek and Sweeney each had eight second-half points to help the Toms pull away.

Sweeney's 16 points matched his season high. The Toms are 17-1 when Sweeney has scored 14 or more points during his career.

St. Thomas plays four of its final six games on the road where it is 5-1 in MIAC play thus far. The Toms play Wednesday night at Augsburg and Saturday afternoon at St. John's.

The Gusties are home to play Carleton on Wednesday night and St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
