The fans at Boydson Baird’s gymnasium saw Maryville jump out to an early 14-7 lead following a three-point exhibition by guards Monte Calloway, Bo Mason, and Jonathan Johnson.
The Eagles battled back and established their only substantial lead of the contest at the 8:23 mark as C-N’s Andrew Johnson hit a 3-pointer to put Carson-Newman up 23-18.
MC’s Andy Chaney put the Scots up by one with his two free-throws (24-23) and Maryville would never relinquish the lead again in the first half.
Maryville would go to the intermission with an eight-point advantage 37-28.
The Eagles spent the second half trying to answer the Scots scoring. CN got to within one on four separate occasions, but Maryville would successfully pull away for the five-point victory.
Maryville (17-4) was paced by the 22-point, 8 rebound effort for junior post player Bradley Blair. Jeremy Holliday had a solid game in the paint with 9 points (7-7 on key free-throws) and 7 rebounds. MC perimeter was led by Bo Mason’s 18 points (4-7 from beyond the arc), 7 assists, and 2 key steals. Senior Andy Chaney stepped up to deposit 12 points to help the Scots.
Carson-Newman (7-11) was led by Kente Hart and his 22-point, 5 assist evening. Andy Tipton and Clay Scott each added 12 points and a combined 11 boards to help the Eagles.
Maryville will return to action on Wednesday February 1st. MC will host the Bulldogs of Fisk University in a GSAC double-header. The Lady Scots will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. while the men will celebrate senior day with a tip-off slated at 8:00 p.m.
The Scots will honor seniors Monte Calloway, Greg Martin, and Andy Chaney before their Great South match-up.
