Steve Banick paced St. Olaf (8-11, 6-8 MIAC) with 22 points and seven rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Mark Bergstrom with 14 points, Jon Bain with 13 and Jon Butala with 11. Bain also had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Neither team shot well. Macalester shot 35% and St. Olaf shot 31%. This is the first time this season the Scots have won back-to-back games. For St. Olaf, this ends a four-game win streak.
The Scots took the lead for good at 66-65 with :47 left in overtime on a Hollander free throw. Hollander and Brian Ranwick iced the win with two free throws apiece in the final :18.
St. Olaf led 27-19 at halftime despite shooting just 29%. After making just 1-of-12 from three-point range in the second half, Macalester heated up in the second period, going 9-for-18 from behind the arc to get back into the contest.
The Oles led 38-26 six minutes into the second half before Macalester got back into the contest with a 12-2 run which decreased the Ole lead to just two points at 40-38 with 10:28 to play. The remainder of the game was close and the margin was four points or less over the final 6:26 of regulation and all of overtime.
Macalester led 12-10 midway through the first half but didn’t lead again until a Lars Johnson three-pointer with just 1:30 to play. A Tom Conboy trey made the score 57-55 in favor of Mac with :40 left but a pair of Banick free throws at :31 sent the contest into overtime. The overtime was close throughout. One of the big plays in overtime was a Ranwick steal with :22 left and with the Scots clinging to a one-point lead.
After going 4-for-8 on treys in the first half, St. Olaf cooled off and went 1-for-12 from behind the line from that point on.
The Scots play Wednesday (Feb. 1) at Concordia-Moorhead, while St. Olaf plays at the Metrodome against Hamline.
