First-year guard Brett Miles (Littleton, Maine) led the Owls (1-16) with 14 points, and sophomore Jonathan Cooley (Palms, Calif.) added 11 for the Owls, who led 15-14 halfway into the first period before Bates (18-2) got untracked and seized a 49-23 lead by halftime, with a 27-2 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Twelve players scored for Bates (18-2), which shot 43.5 percent from the floor to the Owls' 34.6 percent. The Bobcats forced 25 turnovers and outrebounded UMPI 48-28, led by junior forward Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.), who had 11 rebounds to go with nine points, four assists and four steals. First-year center Mark Westhuis (Singapore) grabbed eight boards and blocked two shots.
Junior guard Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) added 12 points and four assists for Bates, which plays its final home game Thursday night against Plymouth State.
