Husson 93, Elms 81

CHICOPEE, MA — Elms College junior guard David Williams (Hartford, CT) netted a team-high 20 points, but Husson College senior center Buddy Leavitt (Guilford, ME) poured in a game-high 35 points, including six 3-pointers to help pace the visiting Eagles to a 93-81 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over the Blazers in a showdown of unbeaten conference teams at the Maguire Center.

Husson won its sixth straight game to improve to 11-7 overall and remained the NAC’s only undefeated team in-conference at 8-0. Elms College saw its four-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 12-6 overall, 7-1 NAC.

Junior point guard John Ancrum’s (Harlem, NY) 3-pointer with 5:48 left in the first half gave the Blazers their largest lead of the game – 35-28.

From there, however, the Eagles closed out the half with a 20-6 run to take a 48-41 halftime lead that they would never relinquish.

Leavitt, currently the NAC’s fourth-leading scorer, potted 16 first half points, including three 3-pointers. The Eagles shot 50-percent (9 of 18) from behind the arc in an opening half that featured eight lead changes.

Husson used a balanced offense that included four players in double figures. Freshman guard Jordan Heath (Bangor, ME) scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, junior guard Jason Harvey (Bucksport, ME) had 11 and senior forward Phil White (Temple Hills, MD) added 10 points in the victory.

Senior forward Lonnie Branyon III (West Haven, CT) matched his season-high with 20 points for the Blazers, who were outscored 42-21 from 3-point range in the loss.

Elms College returns to NAC play on Wednesday, February 1 when it hosts Lesley University at the Maguire Center. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
