York (Pa.) 96, Salisbury 62

YORK, Pa. — Entering today’s contest, the Salisbury men’s basketball team (11-8, 5-3 CAC) held a share of first place in the CAC standings with Mary Washington and their opponent Saturday, the No. 9-ranked Spartans of York College (16-2, 6-2 CAC). In their last meeting at Maggs Gym in early December, the Sea Gulls shocked the Spartans with a 69-67 victory. After 40 minutes of basketball Saturday, the Sea Gulls’ earlier victory was a distant memory, as York routed Salisbury, 96-62, to knock Salisbury from the first-place conference tie.

In the first half, the Spartans held the advantage from the opening tip-off, using strong play in the paint and off the bench to lead to an eighteen point lead. York’s Brian Singer had a strong first-half, scoring 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting and five rebounds.

In the second half, Salisbury was unable to mount any momentum. York continued to build an insurmountable lead using strong bench play once again. Turnovers hurt the Sea Gulls tremendously, as they gave away possession 18 times, leading to 31 points off turnovers for York.

Ray Williams led the Sea Gulls in scoring with 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Derrick Washington added 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and four assists, while Rico Stewart had 10 points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting and eight rebounds.

The Sea Gulls were able to keep Singer scoreless in the second half, but three other Spartans finished in double figures. Brandon Bushey led York with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added five assists. With his performance, Bushey moved to fifth on York’s all-time scoring list with 1,562 career points. Kenny Fass scored 13 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting, while Chad McGowan scored 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Singer added six rebounds in the second half to bring his totals for the day to 11 to lead York.

Salisbury shot 29.3% (17-of-58) from the field, compared to York’s 52.9% (37-of-70) from the field. York also held the advantage in rebounds, 48 to 31.
