MEN’S BASKETBALL … Stout Moves Ahead of UW-W into Second with 80-71 Win
UW-Stout moved ahead of UW-Whitewater and in to second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 80-71 win in Kachel Gym in Williams Center Saturday evening.
The teams were tied 34-34 at halftime. Whitewater’s last lead was 45-44 at 15:06 on a layup by junior forward Rob Perry. Thirteen seconds later sophomore guard Adam Chandler hit a three for the Blue Devils, giving them a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. UW-S twice led by nine points, at 68-59 at 4:52 and 68-77 at 0:52. Terry Farmer made two free throws with 36 seconds left to give UW-S its largest lead of the game, 79-68.
Junior center Jacob Nonemacher scored 20 points for the Blue Devils, adding 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Also scoring in double figures were sophomore forward Ryan Stangel and senior forward Terry Farmer with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Junior guard Anthony Mlachnik scored a season high 15 points to lead UW-W, adding a game high five assists. Also scoring in double figures were junior center Andy Freund with 14, and senior guard Jeremy Manchester with 12 points and four assists.
Stout shot 54% from the field and limited Whitewater to 40%. The teams combined for a total of 58 free throws (Stout was 22-28, Whitewater 23-30).
Stout, 15-4 overall and 8-3 in the WIAC, managed the victory despite having three players foul out.
Whitewater, 13-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play, will host UW-Platteville Wednesday, February 1 at 7:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
