St. Benedict 80, Carleton 65

St. Joseph, Minn. — Hannah Oken-Berg and Kari Christianson scored 14 points each, but visiting Carleton College couldn't overcome a Blazer parade to the free-throw line in falling to St. Benedict, 80-65.

St. Benedict shot 39 free throws, 20 more than visiting Carleton, as the Blazers outscored Carleton 48-33 in the second half to end the Knights' five-game winning streak. The host Blazers were 32-of-43 from the free-throw line, including 25-for-31 in the second half alone. In contrast, Carleton was 15-for-19 in the game, 9-of-12 in the second half.

Anna Biewen was also in double figures with 11 for Carleton (10-8, 8-5 MIAC), which lost for the third time in its last four trips to Claire Lynch Hall.

Megan Vig, who incredibly shot only two free throws, was held to nine points, leaving her one shy of 1,500 points for her career in her 100th career game. Vig and Oken-Berg, who combined for 22 field-goal attempts, had only five free-throw attempts.

Annie Isler added nine points, six assists and four rebounds for Carleton.

Darby Noreen led all players with 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, going 4-for-6 from three-point range and 9-for-10 from the line. Anna Heikenen, the MIAC's second leading scorer at nearly 19 points per game, was 3-for-11 from the field but 11-of-12 from the charity stripe in scoring 17 points and grabbing five rebounds. Katie Kempe added 14 points and five rebounds and Ariel Tauer came off the bench for 13 points and five rebounds.

Carleton now sits alone in fourth place in the MIAC standings, two games back of St. Benedict and Gustavus, which are tied for second. The Knights are a half game ahead of Bethel and 1.5 up on St. Thomas, which was upset by Hamline this afternoon.

Carleton led by as many as seven midway through the first half, as the Knights held the Blazers to 31 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes. The hosts stayed in the game with the three ball, knocking down seven shots from beyond the arc and only two from inside it, paced by Noreen's 4-for-5 performance from 3-point range as she had 17 points at the break as the two teams were tied at 32-32.

Kempe scored the first five of the second half, but Carleton rallied back as Biewen scored and Sarah Lincoln (Fy./Rockford, Minn.) drilled a three. The Knights trailed by four with 13 minutes left and held the Blazers to six field goals the rest of the way, but St. Benedict made 21-of-25 free throws in that span to earn a split in the regular-season series with Carleton.

The Knights shot 41 percent from the floor and held the Blazers to 35 percent. The hosts held a 38-28 spread on the glass, which translated into a 17-2 advantage on second-chance points. CSB also took care of the ball, turning it over only seven times in owning a 13-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Carleton returns home for its next two games, hosting Augsburg on Monday, Jan. 28 at 5:45 p.m. and Gustavus on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on Knights Online.
