New York City Tech 68, Medgar Evers 62

BROOKLYN, NY — Junior forward Otis Saylee (Seward Park / New York, NY) notched his fourth straight 20+ point game for NYC College of Technology in a 68-62 comeback victory at home over CUNYAC South Division rival Medgar Evers College today. The Yellow Jackets, 5-4 in CUNYAC (6-12 overall) were down early on by an 18-4 margin and trailed by ten points at the half, 38-28, but following a 12-2 run midway through the second period to knot the score at 50-50 on a three-pointer by senior guard Clyde Forteau (St. Raymond’s / Bronx, NY), City Tech never looked back. Saylee finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals, while Forteau, who’s only seven points away from 1,000 in his four-year career, finished with 12 points, six assists and six rebounds.

Medgar Evers (5-14, 2-8 CUNYAC) was led by freshman guard Thomas Armstrong (Transit Tech / Brooklyn, NY) with 22 points, followed by junior guard Travis Kennedy (Westinghouse / Brooklyn, NY) with 12 points. Freshman frontcourt players Clovis Essis (Boys & Girls / Brooklyn, NY) and Julius Johnson (Lincoln / Brooklyn, NY) each had double doubles with 11 points each and 16 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets might have lost the game in the first half if not for the outstanding contribution from sophomore Omar Mahoney (Thomas Edison / Queens, NY) with 11 points, on three treys. The 5’7” guard finished the game with a career-high 14 points, including a 4-6 performance from long range. Junior guard Kareem Hanley (Canarsie / Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 10 points for the victors.

The two inter-borough rivals also played a thriller ten days ago at MEC’s gymnasium, with City Tech coming out on top 89-88 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

NYCCT next hosts St. Joseph’s College–Brooklyn on Monday night, January 30, for a non-conference game at 7:00 pm, before returning to CUNYAC play against York College on Wednesday, February 1st.
