Macalester 66, St. Mary's (Minn.) 56

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Lars Johnson went 6-for-7 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 21 points to lead Macalester past St. Mary’s 66-56 Saturday in St. Paul. Macalester improves to 5-13 overall and 4-9 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals drop to 8-9 overall, 6-6 in MIAC play.

Down 51-47 with six minutes to play, the Scots out-scored the Cardinals 19-5 the rest of the way to pull out the win. St. Mary’s had its final lead at 54-53 with 3:43 to go but managed just two points the rest of the way. The Scots closed out on a decisive 13-2 run as Brendan Bosman went 6-for-6 on free throws and Johnson and Brian Ranwick hit big three-pointers.

Tom Conboy added 12 points for the Scots, while Bosman had nine points and eight rebounds. Nate Assel and Jesse Hollander handout out four assists each, while Ranwick went 3-for-6 on three-pointers.

Terrence Smith led a balanced SMU attack with 11 points, while Michael Batterman added 10. Dan Cormier grabbed eight rebounds, while Brensley Haywood came up with five steals. The Cards shot just 35% on the day.

Macalester led 23-14 after 12 minutes of play before the Cards went on a 15-3 run over the final 8:01 of the half to take a 29-26 lead into the intermission. The lead grew to 10 points at 39-29 at the 16:21 mark of the second half before Macalester ran off 13 unanswered points to go up 42-39 with 12:59 remaining. Things were close the rest of the way until the Scots went on their late game-winning 13-2 rally.

Macalester returns to the court Monday (Jan. 31) at home against St. Olaf. The Cards are back in action tomorrow at home against the Concordia Cobbers.
