For the better part of the first half, neither team would lead by more than four points, and that lead came by way of Gordon taking an 8-4 lead 3:33 into the game on a three-pointer from junior forward Mike Herr (Lampter, Pa.). Wentworth scored the next four points, with jumpers coming from senior forward Frankie Hall (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.).
After the seventh tie of the half, Leopard junior forward Bryan Gaine (Braintree, Mass.) hit a jump shot to give Wentworth a 22-20 lead 5:02 left. That would be the last time the Leopards would score a field goal until Hall’s jumper 2:28 into the second half – a span of 7:30. Meanwhile, Gordon took advantage of six Wentworth turnovers and poor shooting and cruised to a 41-24 halftime lead. The Leopards’ lone points during the final moments of the half came when freshman guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) hit two free throws with nine seconds left in the half. Gordon sophomore forward Jon Marstaller (Naples, Maine) led all scorers with 12 first half points.
The Fighting Scots continued to pour it on in the second half – shooting a whopping 75 percent from the floor – and would lead by as much as 39 with 7:11 left in the contest before closing out the game with a 28-point victory.
Marstaller led all scorers with 20 points, while senior guard Aaron Vogelzang (Jericho, Vt.) and senior guard John Beebe (Clive, Iowa) each had 12 points. Sophomore guard Justin Kaufman (Redding, Conn.) had 10 points and eight assists, as the Scots shot 68.2 percent from the floor. For Wentworth, Hall was the lone scorer in double-figures, netting 14 points.
With the win Gordon improves to 14-3 (7-1 CCC) and hosts cross-highway rival Endicott Tuesday night. Wentworth drops to 9-9 (5-5) and hosts Curry Thursday night.
