Framingham State 68, Newbury 66

Framingham, MA — The Framingham State College men’s basketball team battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to defeat the Newbury College Nighthawks 68-66 in overtime at Framingham’s Athletic and Recreation Center today. With the win the Rams move close to .500 at 8-9, while Newbury slips to 7-11.

After trailing for most of regulation, the Rams came from behind to tie the score at 60-60 on a 3-point shot by junior forward Derek Wigman with just 39 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing possession, Newbury worked the clock down and missed a jumper that was rebounded by the Rams with just five seconds left. The Rams were unable to score and the game went to overtime with the score 60-60.

In overtime Newbury built a quick four point lead on a free throw by Matthew Stanton and a 3-pointer by Steven Morris. The Rams battle back to tie the score and take their first lead of the game on a Wigman lay up with 1:34 left. The Rams Ryan Dacey added a lay up to push the lead to four points at 68-64. Walky Magloire sank two free throws for Newbury with 36 seconds left to pull the Nighthawks within two. After a Ram turnover, Newbury was unable to connect on a last second shot that would have tied the game.

Despite having a poor shooting game, Wigman finished with a game high 21 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Rob Scarpato added 15 points on 6 of 6 shooting from the field. Tony Washington and Ryan Dacey added 11 points apiece for the Rams. Newbury was led by Arch Mitchell, who had 19 points and 7 boards, and Steven Morris who chipped in 13 points including 3 of 3 from behind the arc.

The Rams return to action Tuesday night as the travel to North Adams to face the MCLA Trailblazers at 7:30.
