Eastern Mennonite 80, Hampden-Sydney 73

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Eastern Mennonite University jumped out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back in recording an 80-73 win over Hampden-Sydney College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday evening in Harrisonburg, Va.

EMU (10-9, 5-7 ODAC) never trailed in the contest. After taking a 14-4 lead at the 12:51 mark of the first half, the lead never dropped below seven as the Royals took a 37-27 lead into the break.

H-SC (13-5, 7-5 ODAC) scored the first six point of the second half to pull within four, but EMU quickly turned on a 9-2 run to go up by 11. The Royals led by at least seven the rest of the game and led by as much as 14 at one point in recording the 80-73 victory.

Senior guard Dustin Galyon (Sterling, Kan.), who entered the contest with 13 total points for the season, scored 13 for the game, all in the first half. He shot 5-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the three-point arch while also adding two assists.

Three other players scored in double-figures for EMU, led by sophomore guard Korey Whiting (Stafford, Va.) with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Junior forward Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) had his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards. Sophomore guard Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va.) added 12 points, seven boards, and three steals for the Royals.

Hampden-Sydney also had four players in double-figures, led by junior guard Matt Green (Richmond, Va.) with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore guards Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, Ga.) and Tyler Murray (Atlanta, Ga.) each had 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, Va.) chipped in 11 points.

EMU shot 46% for the game, including 51.9% in the second half, and made 5-of-12 three-pointers. H-SC shot 41.8% for the game and made 8-of-23 three-pointers. EMU went 17-for-28 (60.7%) on foul shots, while H-SC was 9-for-13 (69.2%). The Royals are now 7-0 when they make more free throws than the opponent attempts. The Tigers led in rebounding 49-35, but committed 21 turnovers.

EMU will hit the road Monday for a 7 p.m. contest at Lynchburg before returning home for three straight in Yoder Arena starting next Saturday.
