The Wildcats Women’s squad suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Griffins in the opening game of the double-header. Losing 38-69, The Wildcats fall to 5-13 on the year and, due to Chestnut Hill’s status as a non-participating North East Athletic Conference (NEAC) school in 2005-2006, remained 4-5 in NEAC play. The Griffins moved to 11-5 on the year with the win.
The Wildcats, who kept the game within reach at 19-27 at the close of the first stanza, would never recover from a blistering Griffin 1-10 run to open the second half.
Heather Nearpass (’08, Clyde / Clyde-Savannah HS) finished the game with a team-high 12 points for the Wildcats. She also recorded two assists, a game-high five steals and seven rebounds in the game.
Lindsey Tornetta’s dribble penetration, for the Griffins, was the difference in the game. Tornetta finished with a game-high 21 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field and drew multiple fouls to go 11-for-15 from the charity-stripe.
Chestnut Hill’s Andrea Carter finished the afternoon with an impressive game-high 18 rebounds and 15 points on the night to record a double-double.
The Griffins shot 46.4 percent in the second-half from the field.
The afternoon’s second game, which featured the Cazenovia Men’s squad, ended with a classic 95-92 OT win over the Griffins. A big win for the Wildcats in the NEAC standings, Cazenovia improves to 6-13 on the season and 5-5 in NEAC play. The Griffins fall to 5-11 on the year with the loss and 4-4 in the NEAC.
The Griffins jumped out early on the Wildcats by starting the game on a 9-19 run. The Griffin’s ten point lead at the 13 minute mark of the first half would be its largest lead of the game as the Wildcats, little-by-little, chipped away at the Chestnut Hill advantage. Closing the first half at 37-41, the Wildcats went into the locker room just four points behind the Griffins.
The second half proved to be a battle as the teams tied or exchanged the lead 13 times. The Griffins would go up by five, 74-79, in the final minute, on an Isaac Greer lay-up. However, Chestnut Hill failed to defend a Josh Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS) three and then committed a costly turnover that led to an Erik Sauer (’09, Pennellville / Phoenix HS) game-tying lay-in, that brought the game to 79-79, with under 30 seconds left to play.
The Griffins had the game sealed as Dwight Lyons, with 4.1 second left on the second-half clock, hit what appeared to be, at the time, the game winning three that would have put Chestnut Hill up 79-82. However, the officials waved off the shot as the Chestnut Hill bench called a time out before the effort was launched, negating the bucket. Lyons, who got the ball upon the conclusion of the disastrously-timed timeout, failed to recreate the previously waved-off shot and missed a running jumper as time expired to send the game into overtime knotted at 79-79.
Cazenovia’s Bryan Bishop (’06, Watertown / South Jefferson HS) took control of the Wildcats in the extra period. Bishop was 3-for-3 from the field in overtime and sunk three critical free-throws, including two in the last five seconds, to bring the game to its final 95-92 conclusion. Bishop finished with nine points in overtime and 21 in the game. Bishop recorded a double-double as he also finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Cazenovia’s Winans finished the game with a double-double of his own. Winans, who finished with 12 points and a game-high and season-high 12 assists, finished with 7 rebounds, just three boards shy of a triple-double. Winans played the entire 45 minutes of the game.
Sauer finished with a career-high and team-high 23-point effort for the Wildcats. Sauer was 10-for-17 from the field in the game and 2-for-5 from three.
Greer led all scorers with 25 points for Chestnut Hill. Greer was 9-for-22 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.
The Griffins were a perfect 16-for-16 from the charity stripe in the game.
Its best shooting effort of the season, the Cazenovia squad shot 57.6 percent from the field as a team. Going 5-for-6 from the field in overtime and 6-for-6 from the line in the extra stanza, Cazenovia missed just a single shot in the bonus five minutes.
The win was the first overtime victory for the Wildcats in 2005-2006.
