Trinity (Conn.) 68, Colby 48

HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior co-captain forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots to lead the Trinity Bantams to a 68-48 win over the visiting Colby College White Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the NESCAC with its fifth straight win, while the White Mules drop to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the league with their fourth loss in a row.

Trinity scored the final six points of the first half, including the last four on a pair of lay-ups by junior guard Kino Clarke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to take a 34-26 lead at the break. Trinity held Colby to 32.3 percent shooting from the field (10-31) and one three-pointer in seven attempts while outrebounding the White Mules, 21-15. Junior guard Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.) kept Colby in the game in the first half with 11 points and Rhoten paced Trinity over the first 20 minutes with nine points. The Bantams extended their lead to double-digits by the midpoint of the second half at 50-40 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Patrick Martin (Springfield, Mass.) and Colby could get no closer after that.

Trinity held Colby to just seven field goals in the second half and 30.9 percent field goal shooting for the game (17-55) and held a 47-27 advantage on the glass. Patrick Martin finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Clarke had 12 points, and sophomore center Russ Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came off the bench to add 11 points and five boards for the Bantams. Farrell had 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals and junior center Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) totaled 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks for Colby.
