Centre 68, Hendrix 61

CONWAY, Ark. — Zerhusen moves up as Colonels down Hendrix

Senior forward Coy Zerhusen moved into second place all-time for career rebounds in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference history and the Centre College men's basketball team defeated Hendrix College 68-61, Friday, Jan. 27, in Conway, Ark.

Zerhusen, needing only three rebounds to move into second place, pulled down nine rebounds to give him 768 career rebounds. The senior forward trails only former Oglethorpe University standout Russ Churchwell `05, who recorded 849 career rebounds.

The first half was tightly contested, featuring four ties and three lead changes. Hendrix opened the game with an 11-5 lead to take its biggest lead of the game. A three-pointer by Zerhusen at the 8:46 mark in the first period, gave the Colonels their first lead of the game at 21-18.

After the Warriors had regained the lead at 25-22, Centre used a 10-3 run, sparked by six points from sophomore guard Matt Nestheide, to close the half and take a 32-28 lead into halftime.

The second half was similar to the first half as the two teams traded leads six times and tied the game nine times. Neither team led by more than two points until a Hendrix free throw gave them a three-point lead (47-44) with 8:33 left in the game.

Trailing by two points with just less than five minutes to play, junior forward Matt Jacobson connected on a three-pointer to give the Colonels a one-point lead (55-54). After another Hendrix free throw tied the game at 55 apiece, Centre scored nine unanswered points to take a 64-55 lead with only 0:35 remaining. Zerhusen scored six of those nine points, with four of them on free throws.

The Colonels pushed the lead to 10 points before a late Hendrix run fell short. The win was Centre's third straight victory as its record moves to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the SCAC. Hendrix falls to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in conference action.

Senior center Reggie Magnusson paced the Colonels with his seventh 20+ scoring effort. Magnusson scored a team-high 20 points and added a game-high 10rebounds. Nestheide finished with 16 points and along with his nine rebounds, Zerhusen scored 13 points in the win.

King led the Warriors with 20 points. Matt Secrease scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, and Justin Jaramillo added 10 points in the loss.

Centre will travel to Memphis, Tenn., Sunday, Jan. 29, to play Rhodes College. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's double header and is set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. CST.
