Salve Regina 70, Eastern Nazarene 48

NEWPORT, R.I. — NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University senior guard Matt Coute [SR/Somerset, Mass.] fell two points shy of his career high as he led all scorers with 29 points in a 70-48 victory over Eastern Nazarene College tonight in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action.

The Seahawk win snaps a five-game losing streak. The Crusaders led much of the first half and were paced by conference rookie of the week Ricardo Jean-Noel [FR/Montreal, Quebec] with seven points in the first 20 minutes. A steal by Matt Grendal [JR/Foxboro, Mass.] led to a layup by Chris Goodridge [SO/Merrimack, N.H.] at the one-minute mark before intermission, giving Salve Regina a one-point lead before Coute closed out the scoring with a jumper with 30 seconds left.

Coute opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer and Salve Regina enjoyed its first double-digit lead following a steal and dunk from Jon Hazzard [JR/North Kingstown, R.I.]. Goodridge finished with game highs in steals (5) and assists (6). Grendal had 16 points while fellow big man Steve Walsh [SO/Manchester, N.H.] contributed a double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Jean-Noel and Luc Jasmin [SO/Pawtucket, R.I.] paced the Crusaders with nine points apiece. Eastern Nazarene (2-15; 1-7 CCC) falls a game and a half behind Salve Regina (9-8; 3-6 CCC) in the league's South Division. The teams will meet again next Thursday in Quincy, Mass.
