The Corsairs trailed at halftime, 45-33, but rallied to tie the game with 14 minutes remaining. The teams then battled back and forth until junior guard Devin Maiorano hit a pair of three-pointers to give UMD the lead for good with two minutes remaining.
“We didn’t play well in the first half, but we really turned it around in the second,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We came out and played like warriors in the second half, we shot the ball better, played good defense and rebounded well. Devon hit a couple of big threes at the end to put us ahead, and Danny got some big rebounds.”
Junior forward Stephane Abelard added 22 points, junior center Dan Holbrook had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and freshman guard Reese Freeman had six assists.
Jamie Crawford led the Lasers with 28 points, Dwayne Powell added 12, Mike Unwin had 11 and Brad Carvoulis added 10. UMass Dartmouth shot 53 per cent from the field in the second half after making just 36 per cent of their shots in the first half, and won the battle of the boards, 40-34.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-7 with the victory, while Lasell fell to 8-9 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Keene State in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday.
