Cazenovia 89, D'Youville 76

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. — Reaping similar results as the first meeting between the two teams, the Cazenovia College Wildcats split in the Thurs., Jan. 26, North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) double-header with the D’Youville College Spartans.

In the opening women’s battle, the Cazenovia squad fell victim, again, to the inside game of the Lady Spartans’ Christine Halter. Halter, who scored 14 in the Wed., Dec. 6, initial meeting between the two rivals, finished with a game-high 18 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Spartans to a 46-58 conclusion and record a double-double. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 5-12 on the season and 4-5 in NEAC play. D’Youville improves to 8-8 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.

The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 0-10 start to open the game. D’Youville, taking a 23-29 lead into the intermission, started slow in the second half as Cazenovia tied the game at 32-32, at the 14:00 minute mark, on an Ashley Lewis (’07, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS) three-pointer. Out-rebouding the Wildcats in the final minutes, though, the Spartans took advantage of second-chance opportunities to nudge-out the victory.

Cazenovia’s Heather Nearpass (’08, Clyde / Clyde-Savannah HS) was the only Wildcat to reach double-figure scoring. Nearpass finished with a team-high 11 points on the day. Nearpass was 5-for-14 from the field in the game and also recorded four rebounds, three assists and five steals.

Kate Lincoln (’08, Waterloo / Waterloo HS) continued in her strong 2005-2006 campaign. Lincoln finished the night with three rebounds, seven points, two assists and a game-high seven steals in the all-around effort.

The Wildcats, who were 9-for-18 from three-point land in its Tues., Jan. 24, victory at Bard College, were just 2-for-15 from three in the loss.

Six Wildcats recorded a block in the game. The six total block effort was a team-best in 2005-2006.

The Wildcats men’s squad defeated the Spartans 89-76 in the double-header conclusion. With the win, the men’s team moves to 5-13 on the year and 4-5 in the NEAC. The Spartans fall to 3-14 on the year and 2-6 in NEAC play.

Devastating from three, Cazenovia jumped out to a 46-35 half-time lead on the wake of 8-for-11 first-half three-point shooting.

Kyle Ward was one of only two Spartans in double-figures. Ward finished with 31 points, six rebounds, nine assists and a steal in 36 minutes of work. Ward finished the game 12-for-19 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line.

Cazenovia’s Freshman phenom Steven Harris (’09, Watervliet / Watervliet HS), who scored a season-high and career-best 34 in the Wildcats’ win over Bard College on Tues., Jan. 24, lit up the Spartans for an impressive 19 on the night. Harris was 5-for-10 from three-point land and 6-for-17 from the field. Doing most of his damage in the first half, Harris was 4-for-5 from three in the opening period of play.

The Cazenovia College Courtyard by Marriott Student-Athlete of the Week, Josh Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS), finished with a team-high 23 points for the Wildcats. A new season-high, Winans has scored in double-figures in four consecutive games and is now averaging over 10 points-per-game on the season. Winans also finished with three rebounds, four assists and went 8-for-8, mostly in the final minutes of the game, from the free-throw line to seal the 13-point win.

For the first time in 2005-2006, each of the five Cazenovia starters finished in double-figures.

Cazenovia committed a season-low 11 turnovers in the game.

The men’s and women’s squads are next in action at 3:00 PM and 1:00 PM, respectively, on Sat., Jan 28, when the Wildcats are slated to take on Chestnut Hill at the Cazenovia College Athletics Center.
