St. Mary's (Md.) 87, Goucher 80

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team captured an 87-80 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) victory over Goucher College on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference while the Gophers fall to 1-15 overall and 1-6 in league action with the loss.

The contest was tied 38-38 at halftime with six ties and neither team holding more than a five point lead. After a back-and-forth start to the second half, the Seahawks finally took the lead for good at the 12:49 mark after a lay-up from junior guard Dan Engelstad. The Seahawks saw their largest lead of 15 points with 3:57 remaining after a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Tyson Lesesne.

Lesesne led the Seahawks with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting before fouling out with 3:51 remaining. Sophomore swingman T.J. Jordan added 19 points with seven rebounds while freshman forward Calvin Wise also added 19 points with nine boards. Senior forward Tommy Bushell was the fourth player to reach double figures for St. Mary's with 11 points.

Guards James Russo and Jonathan Garritt both recorded double-doubles in the loss for Goucher. Russo scored a game-high 27 points, including seven three-pointers, and collected ten rebounds while Garritt added 25 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Both players also contributed with four assists while Russo also nabbed four steals.

The Seahawks will return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 28, when they travel to Mary Washington for a CAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
