Hood 87, Shenandoah 86

WINCHESTER, Va. - — For the second straight contest, Shenandoah University fell victim to a last second game-winning shot.

Wednesday night it was Hood College's Darnell Edmonds that pulled the trick - he hit the first of his two free throws to give the visiting Blazers an 87-86 non-conference men's basketball victory over SU.

With the score tied at 86-86 after Shenandoah's http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=489"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Jeremiah Lawrence calmly drained a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left, Hood (10-10) held the ball for the final shot of regulation.

Edmonds drove the lane and was fouled by freshman http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=842"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Mike Nickens-Turner with two seconds left, giving the Blazers a pair of chances to score the winning points.
Edmonds swished his first attempt before SU (8-7) called time-out to set up a final play. http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=837"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Moutkar Fawehinmi rebounded Edmonds' miss on the second free throw attempt and immediately called time again, setting up the last play of the contest.

Fawehinmi, who had a career and game-high 27 points, received the in-bounds pass approximately 40 feet from the basket and took one dribble before heaving a desperation three-pointer. Unfortunately, the shot was long and Hood claimed the see-saw contest.

The contest featured 10 ties and 16 lead changes, the last when Tim Abercombie gave HC an 81-80 lead on a three-pointer with 2:59 left. Hood extended this advantage to four points before two free throws each from Fawehinmi and Lawrence tied it for the hosts at the 16 second mark.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well; Shenandoah was 33 for 64 (51.6 percent) while Hood was 31 of 59 (52.5 percent). SU, behind Lawrence' game-high 12 boards, held a 37-29 advantage on the glass.
