Randolph-Macon 59, Lynchburg 34

ASHLAND, Va. — Sophomore forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfield) scored a game-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting (83.3%) and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in just 11 minutes off the bench, as he led Randolph-Macon College to a 59-34 win over visiting Lynchburg College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball action Wednesday evening, January 25th, 2006. Also for the Yellow Jackets, junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont) scored eight points, making 3-of-5 field goals (60.0%), which included 2-of-4 three-pointers (50.0%). He also handed out three assists.

With their third straight victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 16-3 on the season and 11-1 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon is currently ranked #15 in the nation in Division III according to the D3hoops.com poll, which is released on Tuesdays. The Hornets fell to 2-16 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Randolph-Macon led for almost the entire contest. There was one tie, at 2-2. A three-pointer by freshman forward Nick Annacone (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton), assisted by Sutherland, made the score 5-2, and the Yellow Jackets would not surrender the lead. The Hornets did not give up, however, and the biggest lead for Randolph-Macon in the first half was only seven points twice. The hosts were ahead by seven at halftime, 30-23.

The Yellow Jackets would score the first eight points of the second half to go ahead by 15 points, 38-23, and the advantage was double figures for the rest of the game. Randolph-Macon led by 19 points, 44-25. with 8:10 remaining. A three-point play by Lynchburg senior guard Andy Albright (Hudson, OH/Hudson) made it 44-28, but the Hornets would get no closer than 16 points. The biggest lead for the Yellow Jackets proved to be the final margin of 25 points, 59-34.

Following the performances by Dixon and Sutherland, Randolph-Macon junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) added seven points. Freshman forward Boris Varela (Santiago, Chile) totaled career-highs of six points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of reserve action. Freshman guard Justin Short (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) also scored six points, and distributed three assists. Senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) added five rebounds and a game-high five assists, and Annacone also grabbed five rebounds.

Lynchburg was led by senior forward Patrick Prior (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), with nine points off the bench. Albright and junior center Peter Vasiliou (Chincoteague, VA/Chincoteague) each scored eight points. Junior forward Reed Fairchild (Spotsylvania, VA/Massaponax) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
