Claremont, CA — In a contest that was much closer than the final score indicated, La Verne outlasted the Caltech Beavers 70-56. La Verne established control of the game early, at one point leading 19-9 with 8:41 remaining in the half. Caltech slowly climbed back to within 5 at the break. The second half saw neither team find any rhythm as 28 fouls were called, 19 on Caltech and 9 on the hosts La Verne. Caltech was within 2 at 41-39, but La Verne answered quickly. At 46-43, Caltech had a possession, found an open 3 look but missed with 11 minutes remaining the game. After that La Verne was never headed although Caltech drew within 5, 61-56 with 2:32 to play. La Verne made their free throws and final a 3 for the 14 point victory.
Lanier Brown (18), Jason Greenlee (15) and Adrian Ferrera (13) supplied the scoring punch as well as the answers every time Caltech drew close. For Caltech, Jordan Carlson had 21 including 8 of 12 from the floor. La Verne made 22 of 35 free throws and Caltech 15 of 19.
La Verne will play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday with Caltech facing Whittier.
