WORCESTER, Ma —
The Worcester State College men’s basketball team was handed a resounding defeat Tuesday evening in Lancer Gymnasium by the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State College by the final score of, 78-55. The loss, Worcester State’s first in MASCAC action, drops the Lancers to 9-7 on the year and 4-1 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater State improves to 8-7 and evens up at 2-2 in conference play.

The Bears would lead by as many as 24 in the half before the Lancers were able to get the deficit down to 14 with 1:29 to play. Bridgewater State closed the half with a free throw and a Cliff Furtado (Dartmouth, MA) three pointer for an 18 point advantage at the break. Tyler Lang (Franklin, MA) led the way for Bridgewater State in the first half as he rang up 16 points including 11 of 14 shooting from the free throw line. Worcester State was paced by senior Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) who had 8 points in the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Bears would lead by as many as 34 points on their way to the 23 point victory. Lang finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Tom Cuddihy (Scituate, MA) went for 17 points and 5 assists. Worcester State got 17 from Hopkins as he went 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. Spont finished with 10 points.

Worcester State will visit Salem State Vikings on Saturday. Bridgewater will host the Vikings on Thursday.
