Willamette 83, Lewis and Clark 74

SALEM, OR — CJ Stuvland poured in 36 points, including four 3-pointers in the first seven minutes, as the Willamette University Bearcats took sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference with an 84-73 win over Lewis & Clark Tuesday night at the Cone Filed House.

The Bearcats raised their season record to 12-5, 8-1 NWC, and moved 1/2 game ahead of idle UPS in the NWC conference race. The Pioneers fall to 8-9 overall, 4-5 in the NWC.

Stuvland and Brennan Garrelts combined for the Bearcats first 18 points as the Bearcats opened up an 18-5 lead. But as they did all night, the Pioneers came back late in the first half to pull within ten at 43-33, on a pair of Thomas Tillery free throws.

Stuvland and Garrelts continued their hot shooting in the second half, combining for the first eight Bearcat points. But the Pioneers pulled to within 49-45 before Stuvland’s jumper at the 15:16 mark took the lead back to six.

Baskets by Drew Miller and Jason Luchterhand pushed the lead to 55-47. Then, up by six at 56-50, Stuvland canned another 3-pointer, then hit a pair of free throws before layups by Luchterhand and John Olinger got the lead back to 11 with 10:14 to play and the Pioneers never got it below double digits again.

Stuvland got his 36 points on 13-20 shooting, including 7-13 from beyond the arc. Garrelts was 5-9 from the field for ten points. Miller finished with 16 points on 5-7 shooting, while Luchterhand finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Jacob Baran led the Bearcats with ten rebounds while David Fife got a set of fives – five points, five rebounds and five assists – in his first start of the season.

Tillery led the Pioneers with 19 points, David Berggren finished with 17 points and Jeff Christensen added 11.

The Bearcats shot 55% for the game, including 10-21 from 3-point range. The Pioneers shot 48%.

Willamette travels to PLU Saturday night in another NWC match-up.
