OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — David Acree’s buzzer-beating three-pointer lifted the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles to a 66-63 win over Old Westbury this evening at the Clark Athletic Center. With the game tied at 63 and 37 seconds on the clock, St. Joseph’s forced a turnover in the paint and regained possession of the ball. Dan Kane blocked Chris Niblock’s lay-up attempt with seven seconds to play, but the Golden Eagles ended up with possession of the ball with five seconds remaining in regulation. After the inbounds, Acree used one fake, took a dribble and sank a three-pointer which fell through the net with .2 on the clock, lifting St. Joseph’s to the three-point win.
After trailing by six at the break, Dondi Peterson tied the game for St. Joseph’s at the 17:12 mark. Russell Brereton kicked off and capped a 12-2 Old Westbury run, first by grabbing an offensive board and throwing down a dunk, and three minutes later with a three-pointer that put Old Westbury up 49-39.
St. Joseph’s closed in, outscoring the Panthers 10-2 over the next four minutes. Old Westbury surged back, taking a six point lead on a lay-up by Kane, but the Eagles once again came back to tie the game at 58 with 4:05 on the clock.
Michael Garrett’s three with 2:12 to play put Old Westbury back up by five, but Phil Lipari answered for the Golden Eagles, scoring five-straight points to tie the game with just over one minute to play.
The first half was tightly contested and consisted of seven ties and eight lead changes, but a three-pointer by Jared Weir with 1:10 remaining gave Old Westbury its largest lead of the half, a six-point advantage.
Old Westbury shot 41.7% (5-of-12) from the three-point line in the first half, while St. Joseph's struggled from long range, hitting only 2-of-9.
Garrett finished with 19 points to lead the Panthers, while Brereton finished with 15. Acree led all scorers with 22 for the Eagles.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, January 26 when they host Skyline foe Kings Point at 7:30 pm.
