Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Downs Rivier, 65-58

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team posted a 65-58 victory against Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Wednesday evening.
Junior Brian Fernandes (Fall River, Mass.) led the way for Johnson & Wales with 24 points while freshman Justin Adams (Providence, R.I.) added 13 points and four assists. Senior Conor Moran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) added 10 points and three rebounds in the win for JWU. Leading the way for Rivier was John McMahon (Somerville, Mass.) with 18 points and 5 rebounds while sophomore Jeff Carpenter (Meredith, N.H.) added 13 points and 12 boards.
Rivier jumped out to a 13-0 lead, capped by a jumper by Carpenter at the 14:49 mark. The Wildcats responded, however and used a 13-0 run of their own, including a jumper by Fernandes to knot the game at 13-13 with 11:26 left in the first half. The two teams then traded baskets through the remainder of the first half with JWU taking a 29-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After matching baskets early in the second half, Rivier held the 46-43 advantage on a jumper by Carpenter with 9:30 left on the clock. The Wildcats then used a 9-0 run, camped by a jumper by Moran to take their largest lead of the game, a 52-46 lead with 7:25 remaining in the game. The Wildcats lead grew to as much as eight points down the stretch before taking the 65-58 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 6-11 on the season, 4-7 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference while Rivier falls to 6-9, 2-6 in league . The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 28th when they host Norwich in a GNAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
