Andre Wagner scored a game-high 19 points off of the Buena Vista bench by hitting 7 of 11 from the field. Jeff Bissen contributed 14 points and five rebounds as the Beavers held a double-digit lead for the last 25 minutes of the game.
Trailing 9-6 four minutes into the game, Buena Vista went on a 16-4 run and never looked back. Five different Beavers scored during that stretch as the squad defeated the Kohawks for the fourth straight time. Buena Vista ended up taking a 38-23 lead into halftime.
It took over three minutes for either team to make a field goal in the second half. Coe closed the margin to 57-43 with just over six minutes to play, but never mounted a serious comeback threat.
Mike Kilburg, who scored 32 points against Wartburg College on Saturday, was held to a team-high 12 points and six rebounds to lead Coe. Kyle Kuenstling added nine points as the Kohawks dropped their second straight conference game after starting the season 5-0 in the league.
Buena Vista, which entered the game as the worst free throw shooting team in the conference, perhaps found the easiest way to win is to not have to rely on its free throw shooting. The Beavers did not attempt a free throw until there was less than seven minutes remaining in the game and they had already built up a 15 point lead.
Buena Vista closed out the evening hitting 27 of 49 shots from the field. The Beavers, who improved to 5-11 on the season and 3-4 in the conference, were 10 of 19 from long range. They outrebounded the Kohawks 39-25.
Coe, which entered the game as the best field-goal shooting team in the IIAC, was held to 18 of 58 from the floor (31%). The Kohawks, now 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference, made just 5 of 32 (16%) from long range.
Buena Vista will continue conference play on Friday, January 27 by hosting Simpson College.
