Amherst 78, Babson 51

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior co-captain John Bedford (Ridgewood N.J.) scored 18 points to help the Amherst College men’s basketball team to a 78-51 win over host Babson College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night. The Lord Jeffs, ranked 10th in the nation by d3hoops.com, improved to 14-2 with their fourth straight victory, while Babson slipped to 7-11.

Fourteen different players scored points for Amherst, which never trailed in the contest. Babson did manage to stay close for the first nine minutes behind the strong play of sophomore Greg Bush (East Islip, N.Y.), whose two free throws with 12 minutes left in the half pulled Babson to within three at 15-12. However, the Lord Jeffs scored the game’s next seven points to pull away from the Beavers. Amherst eventually took a 38-20 lead by the end of the half en route to the 78-51 victory.

Bedford finished with 18 points and six rebounds while shooting 6-of-9 from the field. Junior Dan Wheeler (Bloomington, Minn.) added nine points in the victory, while junior Tim McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J.) contributed seven points, seven boards, three steals, and two blocked shots. The Lord Jeffs blocked a total of 11 shots in the contest, including four by junior Dan O’Shea (Lawrence, Mass.).

Bush was outstanding in defeat for Babson, hitting 6-of-12 from the field and 11-of-12 from the line for a game-high 23 points. First-year Pat Belniak (Sutton, Mass.) hit 4-of-6 from the floor and all free of his foul shots for 12 points, and senior captain Brian Parsons (Queensbury, N.Y.) added six points and a team-best seven rebounds.
