Rochester 53, Case Western Reserve 50

ROCHESTER, NY — Jeff Juron scored four points and Jon Onyiriuka had two in the closing minute as the University of Rochester held off Case, 53-50, at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Juron sank a three-point goal from right wing with the shot clock winding down and 1:20 left. It gave the Yellowjackets a 50-45 lead. After Case’s Funso Lafe drove for a conventional three-point play with 56 seconds left, Onyiriuka made two free throws and Juron one in the last 14 seconds to wrap up the win.

Rochester improved to 3-2 in the University Athletic Association, 12-4 overall. Case is 2-3 in the UAA, 10-6 overall.

Mike Goia led Rochester with 12 points and Onyiriuka had 11 plus nine rebounds. Juron scored eight points and handed out eight assists.

Carson Oren and Lafe led the Spartans with 11 points apiece. Steve Young had nine points and Mason Conrad added eight.

Fueled by a 15-4 run over six minutes, Rochester built a 20-12 lead. Tim Brackney hit two three-point goals in the run. Goia hit a three-pointer and Dan Milbrand made a layup, extending the lead to 27-13 with 4:37 left.

Matt Cannan had four points and Brad Sutton scored three as Case finished the half on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to 28-22 at halftime. Young’s layup four minutes into the second half pulled Case within 34-30. Eric Snider scored four points to key an 8-0 run that opened the lead to 42-30 with 11:11 left.

Oren scored five points and Conrad had four as Case cut it down to 44-41 with 5:44 left. Oren’s jumper made it 47-45 with 2:27 remaining. After Juron and Lafe swapped three-point plays (50-48 Rochester with 0:56 left), Juron missed a three-point goal. Lafe rebounded. He missed a runner in the lane with 19 seconds left. Joe Canty rebounded for Rochester. Canty missed a one-and-one with 19 seconds left. Onyiriuka rebounded the miss and was fouled. He sank both shots for a 52-48 lead. After Lafe missed again, Onyiriuka tipped the rebound to Juron who was fouled and he made one of two for a 53-48 lead with six ticks left. Lafe’s layup with a second to play provided the final margin.
