Leading the way for Randolph-Macon was junior guard Stephen Sutherland (Morgantown, WV/Fairmont), with a career-high 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting (75.0%), which included 5-of-7 three-pointers (71.4%). He was also 5-for-6 at the free throw line (83.3%). Sutherland scored six of Randolph-Macon’s 12 points in overtime. Also for the Yellow Jackets, junior forward Phil Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) made 6-of-11 field goals (54.5%) for 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and tied his career-high with five blocked shots. Freshman guard David Carlson (Woodbridge, VA/Flint Hill School) added 10 points, three assists and three blocked shots off the bench.
Following a 6-6 tie early in the contest, Washington and Lee was ahead for most of the first half. With 4:33 remaining in the period, the Generals actually led by 11 points, 29-18. But Randolph-Macon put together a 12-0 run to go ahead 30-29 with a little over two minutes left before the break. Washington and Lee had a 33-31 halftime lead.
A jumpshot by Randolph-Macon junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) early in the second tied things up once more, at 33-33. Washington and Lee would go ahead again, leading by as many as six points twice, but again Randolph-Macon knotted the score, at 43-43, this time on a three-pointer by Sutherland, assisted by Carlson, with 8:51 on the clock.
The Generals regained the lead and held it for about five minutes. With 3:26 remaining in regulation, Randolph-Macon’s Hawley made two foul shots to put his team up 52-51. It was the first lead for the Yellow Jackets since late in the first half. The hosts were ahead for the next three minutes, until Washington and Lee junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, FL/Ridgewood) nailed a three-pointer off an assist by freshman guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, MN/Holy Angels) with :23 on the clock. That made the score 59-59, and sent the game into overtime.
Other than a tie at 63-63, Randolph-Macon was ahead for the entire overtime period, outscoring the Generals 12-8. Sutherland scored six of his team’s points in overtime, while Washington and Lee sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) had four of his team’s eight points.
Following the performances by Sutherland, Hawley, and Carlson, Randolph-Macon’s Krovic added nine points. Sophomore forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfeild) totaled eight points on 4-of-5 shooting (80.0%), plus a team-high eight rebounds.
Washington and Lee had five players score in double figures. Goodman led the way, with 12 points. Bienemann scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Halkitis, junior forward Alex White (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh), and freshman guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) also each scored 10 points. White grabbed six rebounds too. Freshman forward Ben Heller (Houston, TX/Lamar) added seven points, and freshman forward Ryan Owens (Floral Park, NY/Chaminade) had seven rebounds.
