The Bulldogs (6-9, 5-8 ASC) also did a nice job on the defensive end by holding Sul Ross State to 33.8 percent shooting and to 25.8 percent from the three-point line.
Sul Ross State fell to 7-9 overall and to 7-6 in the American Southwest Conference.
TLU’s Nate Walton scored 19 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Walton, a freshman wing, was 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from the three-point line over the final 20 minutes of action.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 60.7 percent in the second half and hit 4-of-7 three-point shots (all by Walton).
Matt Nelson added 11 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Will Hudson scored 18 and registered five assists and five rebounds. Brian Alves recorded nine rebounds and eight points.
Arturo Escobar led Sul Ross State with 20 points. Sidney Hooper added 15 points and five rebounds.
TLU led for the entire game. But Sul Ross State trailed by only two at the break, 42-40, and closed within two in the second half, 70-68, after a Hooper three-pointer with 3:28 to play.
The Bulldogs jumped the lead to 10 with a quick 8-0 run over the next 1:26. Brian Alves made a lay-up, and Walton hit a three-pointer and then scored on a three-point play.
Hudson and Walton each made lay-ups in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach.
TLU turned the ball over 22 times and kept the Lobos in the game despite their poor shooting. Sul Ross took 21 more shots than TLU and had a 25-13 edge in points off turnovers.
The Bulldogs did have 22 assists. Point guard Jason Morales dished out eight assists, scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Texas Lutheran hosts two more conference games next week when McMurry and Hardin-Simmons visit Memorial Gymnasium. TLU plays McMurry at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and meets Hardin-Simmons at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
