GORHAM, ME — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team scored 10 of the game’s first 12 points, raced to a 38-22 halftime lead and went on to a 74-56 victory against host Southern Maine in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium Saturday.

Junior center Dan Holbrook led the way, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing a career-high 22 rebounds. His lay-up ignited a 24-9 run that left the Corsairs ahead, 36-19, with 2:17 remaining in the first half. Junior guard Devon Maiorano and junior forward Stephane Abelard each contributed a pair of three-pointer during the run, which also included baskets by Holbrook, junior guard Chris Frazierand junior forward Paul Pawlowski.

“We played real well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “Devon shot the ball really well, and Danny was incredible, he was great on the boards. We played well as a group, worked hard, played good defense, made them take some tough shots, and got the rebounds.”

Abelard added 12 points, Maiorano contributed 11, and freshman guard Reece Freeman had 10 points and six assists. Abelard also blocked three shots as UMD held the Huskies to 26.5 per cent from the field in the first half and 33.3 per cent for the game.

Bill Hardwick led USM with 13 points, while Andy Frost and Walter Phillips added 12 points each.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-6 and 4-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine dropped to 9-8 and 3-4 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Tuesday evening.
