Late Rally Falls Short as Monks Subdue Nighthawks

BROOKLINE, MA -- St. Joseph’s College of Maine staved off a late flurry by Newbury College and held on for a 76-65 victory, Saturday, in Brookline. The Nighthawks, who trailed by as many as 17 in the second half, cut the deficit to 10, when sophomore Walkie Magliore (Waltham, MA/Waltham) connected on a lay-up and hit the bonus point from the charity stripe at the 3:46 mark. Freshman Marcal Matthews (Manchester, CT /Howell Cheney Tech) ignited the surge with a steal and then soared in for a dunk that electrified the solid crowd at the Pappas Gymnasium. Matthews also finished on a nice feed from senior co-captain Arch Mitchell (Framingham, MA/Framingham), before the Monks handed Newbury the dagger. Junior Marcus Alexander (Niceville, Niceville, FL) drained a three-pointer that effectively put the game out of reach for the Nighthawks.

Three-pointers by Kyle O’Connor, Mitchell, and Sonny Abraham (Lynn, MA/Lynn Tech) kept the Nighthawks rolling early on, but ultimately the Green and Gold could not solve St. Joseph’s potent offensive attack. Mitchell poured in a game-high 20 points for the Nighthawks. Magloire finished with 17 and senior co-captain Matt Stanton (Lynnfield, MA /Lynnfield) chimed in with eight. The monks were led by Elbie Murphy, who scored 19 points. Chad Pulkkinen (Windham, Windham, ME) Noah LaRoche (Exeter/Exeter, NH) and Matt Plummer (Naples/Maples, ME) all hit for 15.

Newbury fell to 7-8, while the St. Joseph’s College improved to 9-5
