Hardin-Simmons 88, Concordia-Austin 79

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team outlasted Concordia-Austin, 87-79 in American Southwest Conference action, Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.

Mardochee Jean tied the non-scholarship era school record with 18 rebounds and Colby Hale dished out 11 assists as the Cowboys moved to 8-8 on the year and 7-6 in American Southwest Conference play.

Jean has set the school single-game record for blocked shots and rebounds this season. Zach Pickelman led the Cowboys with 26 points and Tanner Kudrna added 19 to fuel the Cowboys, who played the game without starting guard James Peters, who was out with an ankle sprain.

The Cowboys used a couple of 6-0 runs in the first half to push its lead out 24-12 at the 10:19 mark. It was the biggest lead of the night for the Cowboys as the scrappy Tornados fought back and finally took the lead in the second half at 62-61 with 7:18 play.

However, Pickelman scored on the next trip down and the Cowboys never trailed again.

Joel McDonald scored 23 points and hauled in nine rebounds. George Freeman added 21 off the bench. The Tornados fell to 3-12 overall and 2-11 in league play. HSU plays at Schreiner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
