With the two teams tied at 65-65, Foster sank both free throws with just over a minute to play. They proved to be the final points of the game as Hamline (7-9, 6-5 in the MIAC) forced a turnover on the Gusties' next possession.
After junior Sam Wiener missed a three that would have sealed the win, the Gusties (12-4, 7-4) could not get a good look, and Adam TeBrake had to settled for a three-point heave as time expired.
The Pipers came back from a 35-28 halftime deficit with clutch free throw shooting. Hamline struggled from the charity stripe in the first half, going just 3 of 11, but the Pipers went 19 of 21 in the second half for their first win against the Gusties in 22 attempts.
Foster led the way for Hamline with 21 points, including 11 of 14 from the free throw line. First-year Tony Thrasher added 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Guards Jon DeRock and Wiener each dished out four assists.
Gustavus was paced by TeBrake's 16 points. He was 6 of 19 from the field. Phil Sowden and Kane Sivesind each added 10 points.
