The win by the Knights (11-5, 8-3 MIAC) marked their eighth straight in MIAC play, the second-longest win streak since Carleton rejoined the conference in 1983-84. The 31-point victory marked the second largest margin for the Knights over the Tommies (12-4, 9-2 MIAC), as the 2003-04 squad won at St. Thomas by 33 points on Jan. 14, 2004.
Carleton, with Gustavus losing at Hamline, is now alone in second place in the MIAC standings, one game back of St. Thomas.
Jake Phillips added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Knights.
Forkrud keyed a huge first half for the Knights, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while Johnson had 15 of his 25 in the first 20 minutes as the hosts claimed a 41-27 lead at the break. Carleton 56 percent from the floor and finished the half on a 16-6 spurt. The Knights outscored UST 25-8 over the final 10 minutes of the first half.
The Knights left little doubt as to the outcome, extending the lead to 21 in the first six minutes as Johnson scored five straight points to push Carleton’s advantage to 50-29. The Tommies managed only eight points over the half’s first 10 minutes and scored only 17 points in the final 20 minutes of the game.
The Knights shot 51 percent from the field and held St. Thomas to 33 percent. The Tommies, who came in averaging nearly 76 points per game, were held 32 points under their season average. Carleton out-rebounded the Tommies 35-28 and held the MIAC’s leading scorer, Isaac Rosefelt, to eight points on 2-for-5 shooting with only three rounds. He came in averaging 12.4 points and 11.5 rebounds a contest.
Bryan Schnettler paced UST with 12 points and Mike Keating added 11.
The Knights travel to St. Paul on Wednesday, Jan. 25 to play Hamline University at 8 p.m. The game can be heard live on Knights Online. UST hosts Macalester on Wednesday as well, with that game starting at 8’clock.
