Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 59, Caltech 49

Pasadena, Ca — Claremont-Mudd-Scripps rode the senior leadership and production of John Parsons (15 points) and Miles Taylor (19 points) to hold off Caltech at Caltech. Each team appeared sluggish in the first half coming off difficult games. CMS won the always emotional, physical game versus rival Pomon-Pitzer on Wednesday and the Beavers legs were still not all the way back from the high tempo outing at Redlands.

Dan Winterbottom quickly moved the Stags to an 8-2 lead with a pair of 3's and 2 free throws; they would never relinquish that lead or cushion but also could not quite finish Caltech off decisively. With 4 minutes remaining in the half and trailing 21-8, Caltech finally found some rhythm offensively to outscore the Stags 10-4 during that time. At the half CMS lead by 7, 25-18.

Caltech senior Jordan Carlson (24 points, 8 of 11 from the floor, 7 for 9 free throws) opened the second half with a 3 off the dribble to cut the lead to 4 but that was as close as the Beavers would get. CMS answered every hopeful Caltech moment with great defense and just enough offense to never allow hosts to get any closer than 9. Neither team did itself any favors at the free throw line. Caltech was 14 of 23 and CMS 23 of 41.

For the first time in 4 conference games, Caltech was outrebounded 34-24. CMS next plays Occidental to break the first place tie in SCIAC. Caltech travels to play La Verne and Whittier next week.
