Blackburn 72, Maryville (Mo.) 66

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men’s basketball team suffered their first loss in conference play on Saturday as the Saints fell 66-72 to Blackburn College. Maryville now stands at 4-1 in the SLIAC and drops to second place behind Blackburn who remains undefeated in the conference.

Foul trouble put the Saints in a tough position as the team’s leading scorers, Matt Regan and Ben Hebl, fouled out of the game. Teddy McGrath also fouled out while Stephen Bash and Matt McCarthy were each playing with four fouls.

Maryville was ahead at halftime 34-29 but couldn’t produce enough offense in the second half to keep the lead. Blackburn outscored the Saints in the second half 43-32. Significant damage came from the free throw line as the Saint’s fouling put Blackburn at the charity stripe. The Beavers sank 28 free throws and were sent to the line 36 times.

Despite fouling out, Regan led the team with 11 points and sank five of his seven shots from the field. Bash and McCarthy followed with 10 points a piece and added six and three rebounds respectively. Bash was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line while McCarthy was equally as accurate making 6-for-6.

Freshman Aaron Steinke helped on the boards pulling down five rebounds during the game. The forward also contributed six points in the Saints’ defeat. Hebl totaled eight points in Saturday’s game and dished out three assists. McGrath also added eight points as did senior Ryan Klein.

Blackburn’s Zeb Hammond led the Beavers in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Teammates Zak Allan, Bryan Waters, and Luka Djedovic also scored in double digits. Allan finished with 14 while Waters and Djedovic had 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Saints will return to the Moloney arena as they take on MacMurray College at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 25.
